Professor Zhan Yong Ming

A Dizi performer and an educator, Zhan Yong Ming is currently a professor at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he is concurrently appointed as the Director of the Orchestral Instrument Department, mentoring Master Degree students. He is also the President of Singapore Dizi Society, Director of the Singapore Musician Association and a member of the assessment panel for the level examinations at the Centre of the Arts, National University Singapore, as well as the Executive Editor for Bamboo Flute Teaching Materials. The China’s national top musician is also the Honorary Director of Zhao Songting Research Institute in addition to his other appointments. In the early 70s, Mr Zhan was accepted to study under Sizi maestro Zhao Songting in Zhejiang Arts School, where he also received guidance from other Dizi maestros like Lu Chun Ling, Liu Guanyue, Huo Wei and Zeng Yingqing. Having Graduated from Central Conservatory of Music in the Department of Chinese Instrument and subsequently the Chinese National Academy of Arts, Mr Zhan furthered his studies at University of Western Sydney, Australia, and obtained his Master’s Degree. Decades of experience competing in both China and overseas won him umpteen recognized awards. Since the beginning of his career as an educator, Prof Zhan has mentored numerous high achieving Dizi performers and has contributed significantly to the academic research in Dizi culture. In his career lifetime, Mr Zhan had created countless performances and lectures in over 20 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and America. In 1997, the Dizi virtuoso moved to Singapore and taught in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts before taking up his professorship at Folk Music Department in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2004.
